Leadership is not just about overseeing tasks or managing people; it’s about creating an environment where you and your team can grow, thrive, and succeed.
My name is Henry Chidgey. As a leadership coach and mentor, I specialize in helping owners and executives of small—to medium-sized companies that employ skilled blue-collar workers. My purpose today is to share how you can improve your professional and personal life by learning from Leadership and Self-Deception and applying my TRIP Leadership Philosophy.
Millions of people, including myself, can attest that learning leadership principles works. But knowledge alone isn’t enough. It requires consistent implementation and practice. Let me guide you through this transformative journey, starting with the insightful book Leadership and Self-Deception by The Arbinger Institute and how it ties into the TRIP Leadership Philosophy that I live by and teach.
Why “Leadership and Self-Deception” Is a Must-Read for Leaders
Every year, I find myself returning to Leadership and Self-Deception. Yes, I reread this book annually because it’s not just about leadership tactics—it’s about understanding and transforming the way we view ourselves and others as leaders. It is about tuning up our mindset. The narrative in the book focuses on the subtle self-deceptions that many leaders (and individuals in general) fall into without realizing it. The story, set within a corporate context, shows characters who could easily be any of us, struggling with professional and personal challenges. Their journey of conflict, introspection, and realization serves as a mirror, reflecting our own tendencies toward self-deception.
The Key Lesson from “Leadership and Self-Deception”: Moving Out of the Box
One of the book’s central concepts is being “in the box”—a metaphor for a state where we justify our behaviors while blaming others. Leadership and Self-Deception urges us to recognize when we are in the box and teaches us how to step out of it. This is a continuous process of self-awareness and growth. Each time I read this book, I discover new layers of how I can better serve as a leader and as an individual, but more importantly, how to see others as human beings—not as obstacles or gears in a machine.
This shift in perspective is fundamental. As leaders, we often make the mistake of seeing our team members as mere parts of the process. Instead, we need to see them as people with their own needs, strengths, and challenges. When we truly understand this, we become better leaders who connect, empower, and motivate those around us.
The TRIP Leadership Philosophy: Trust, Respect, Integrity, and Purpose
Over the years, I’ve developed a leadership philosophy, which I call TRIP. This philosophy consists of four key pillars that guide every decision, interaction, and leadership moment:
- Trust: Trust is the foundation of all meaningful relationships. It’s all about the trust we give to our team and the trust we earn from them through our actions.
- Respect: Respect ensures that everyone feels valued, regardless of their current performance level or behavior.
- Integrity: Integrity means aligning our actions with our words. It’s the practice of being honest and transparent.
- Purpose: Purpose is our North Star. It helps all of us make decisions that are bigger than ourselves, beyond personal gain. How each of us make a difference.
The TRIP principles align perfectly with the teachings of Leadership and Self-Deception. When we see others as people, trust is built. When we value every individual, respect grows. Stepping out of self-deception aligns with integrity and living with a purpose greater than ourselves fuels true leadership.
Applying TRIP and Leadership and Self-Deception to Your Leadership Journey
The synergy between Leadership and Self-Deception and the TRIP Leadership Philosophy offers a holistic approach to leadership. The book provides us with the tools to recognize and overcome self-deception, while TRIP shows us the path to authentic leadership that’s grounded in trust, respect, integrity, and purpose.
Here’s how you can start applying these principles in your leadership journey:
- Practice Reflection: Like the characters in Leadership and Self-Deception, take time to reflect on your actions and behaviors. Are you seeing your team as people, or are you falling into the trap of viewing them as mere objects? Reflection is key to stepping out of the box.
- Embody the TRIP Values: As a leader, demonstrate trust, respect, integrity, and purpose in every decision you make. When you lead by example, your team will follow suit.
- Focus on Growth: Leadership is a continuous journey of growth. Use the lessons from Leadership and Self-Deception to learn from your mistakes and lead with a clear sense of purpose.
Conclusion: Become the Leader You’re Meant to Be
Leadership is not about titles or positions; it’s about making a lasting impact on those around you. Leadership and Self-Deception and the TRIP Leadership Philosophy provide the blueprint for achieving that kind of leadership. By practicing these principles consistently, you can transform not only your work life but your personal life as well.
